Citrus Lovers Hand Scrub
Winter is over and spring has finely arrived. I’m not sure about you but for me digging in the soil is one of my most favorite rituals of spring. It’s always long absence between fall harvest and spring planting before I can get my hands back in the dirt. With that said, I don’t like to wear gloves when I’m planting or working the soil. This isn’t the best practice as my hands and nails get very dry and brittle. To offset some of the damage that can be done to your hands, I apply a Citrus Lovers Hand Scrub. This greatly improves the look and feel to my hands and brittle finger nails. I developed a recipe for this hand scrub that works quite well. I call it, “Citrus lovers hand scrub” for the obvious citrus components. The recipe is quite simple, but it may be difficult to find the ingredient without going to a local health food store or a food and health cooperative. Here is the recipe. Give it a try and tell me what you think.
Citrus Lovers Hand Scrub recipe:
2/3 cup Coarse Sea Salt, or combine magnesium crystals, or Epsom salt
1 tablespoon almond oil or 1 tsp. each; almond, grapeseed and olive oil.
1 1/2 teaspoons jojoba oil or apricot oil
1 1/2 teaspoons avocado oil or castor oil
3 drops Vitamin E (optional)
3 drop Rose hip seed oil (optional)
12 drops Organic Orange Essential Oil
8 drops Organic Lemon Essential Oil
6 drops of Organic Peppermint Essential Oil
You can always infuse certain herbs like; calendula, horsetail herb into your oil to help promote healthy nails as they are high in silica. These are optional components that can also be found at your local natural health store.
The essential oils give it the wonderful citrus aroma while the other oils give it a moisturizing characteristic. The salts create a slight abrasive quality which helps to clean dirt and stains from working in the soil.
Mix ingredients thoroughly in a glass or stainless bowl with a stainless spoon until the mixture is the consistency of very wet sand. Pack into clean, dry jar. This will last for up to 6 months.
When applying Citrus Lovers Hand Scrub to your hands, use a spoon to scoop a small amount from the container. Place the mixture in the palm of your hand. Gently massage on the tops and the palms of your hands. If you have a little extra, rub it up your arms and rinse. This mixture is somewhat aggressive and is meant to clean and moisturize weathered skin.
Caution: Know that citrus oils (orange, lemon, lemongrass, and bergamot) contain coumarins which are chemicals that can produce photosensitivity. These oils should never be used on the skin within 6 to 12 hours before being in the sun. Citrus Lovers Hand Scrub is not recommended for people with sensitive skin.
